NYACK STUDENT WINS BIG AT THE TEEN CHOICE AWARDS
Chad Bullock, a student at Nyack College’s residential campus in Rockland County, N.Y., is the winner of the 2008 Do Something Award presented at the tenth annual “Teen Choice Awards.” The prize money was awarded by Do Something, Inc., a national not-for-profit organization (www.dosomething.org) based in New York, whose mission is “to inspire, support and celebrate a generation of do-era: people who see the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action.”
CNN calls these Gen-Y kudos, formerly known as the “BR!CK Awards,” “the Oscars of youth service awards.” Nine nominees were selected through an online application process and in-person interviews with the Do-Something staff. This new category was added to “Teen Choice Award,” which aired Monday, August 4, on FOX Television Networks. Celebrity favorites on the two-hour program were selected by teens aged 13–19. Winners, who received a full-size surfboard, represented music, movies, sports and television industries.
Bullock, a 19-year-old Communications major, is an anti-tobacco activist who hails from Durham, North Carolina. He was motivated to begin his crusade after his grandfather’s death from lung cancer. “Nyack College has a great sense of family and everyone has really shown tons of support in my efforts,” says Bullock. “I’m so glad I chose to come to Nyack as I learned a lot about myself as a person, a leader and a Christian.”
Nancy Lublin, CEO of Do Something, Inc. says, “We think young people aren’t just tomorrow’s leaders; many young people are doing amazing things right now.” Bullock is a case in point: One of his biggest accomplishments was making the Durham Bulls Arena a smoke-free facility. “I am going up against billion dollar corporations that have a lot of influence,” Bullock says, “but I will make sure that my voice will be heard.”
He is elated after winning the award but is already planning how the money will be spent. “This award is a BIG DEAL. Do you know how many smoke-free stadiums we can get? Think about how many people we can prevent from smoking. I usually do my tobacco use prevention work with no money at all and now to have $100,000 for my efforts is simply amazing!”
The 2008 Do Something Award was presented by actress Scarlett Johansson at the show, which was taped in Universal City, California on Sunday, August 3.
