Ordinations

With the Lord

Paula M. Lithander, March 25, 1957–August 5, 2009. Paula was born in Geneva, Ill., to Betty and Norville Jordan. Paula married Rev. Kirk Lithander on September 4, 1982. Her husband has served in the C&MA as an official worker for more than 12 years and is currently an associate pastor at Fairhaven Church in Dayton, Ohio. Paula worked at Eagle’s Flight, Inc., a leadership development company. She was also a labor coach for expectant mothers and enjoyed playing volleyball and softball. Paula was active in the worship and fine arts ministry at Fairhaven Church and was passionate about sharing Christ’s love with those around her. She is survived by her husband; daughters Debbie and Emily and sons Josh and Caleb.

Helen Regier died October 11, 2009. She was 77 years old. Helen and her husband, Ernest, served with the C&MA from 1960–2009 planting and ministering in churches in Shaunavon, Prince Albert, Lauson Heights and Erindale, Sask., Canada. She is survived by her husband and children Marlon, Lowell and Sheri.

Rev. John C. Nevius, November 12, 1926–November 26, 2009. John was born in North Plainfield, N.J., to Harvey and Mary Nevius. On July 9, 1950, he married Pauline Steiner in Orrville, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his service, he attended the Missionary Training Institute (now Nyack College, Nyack, N.Y.) and received a master of divinity degree from Ashland (Ohio) Seminary. John served as a C&MA pastor for 45 years in Vermilion and Ashland, Ohio; Muncie and Danville, Ind.; and Dixon and Mattoon, Ill. After he retired, he moved to Ohio and ministered in various churches. John is survived by his wife; daughter Rachel; and sons John, Douglas, Wesley, Thomas and Mark.

Esther V. Carberry, July 13, 1936–December 1, 2009. Esther was born in Meltonville, Iowa, the youngest of 11 children. In 1958, she graduated from St. Paul Bible College (now Crown College, St. Bonifacius, Minn.). She then went to Swedish Covenant Nursing School, becoming a registered nurse. Esther worked in Kentucky for 48 years as a Bible teacher and nurse. From 1965–1972, she served the C&MA as pastor of Beefhide First Alliance Church in Myra, Ky. She also worked as the nurse at C&MA Camp Begomi in Kentucky. She retired in 1999. Esther is survived by four brothers and one sister.

Mildred I. Lofsted, September 25, 1918–December 20, 2009. Mildred was born in Malden, Miss., but grew up in Redlands, Calif. While in high school, Mildred attended an Alliance church and accepted the Lord in 1933. She attended Simpson Bible Institute in Seattle, Wash. (now Simpson University, Redding, Calif.) to prepare for missionary work. There, she met her future husband, Bert Lofsted. After graduation, they attended the Missionary Training Institute (now Nyack College, Nyack, N.Y.). Upon completion of their studies, Bert pastored a church in Roseville, Calif., while Mildred went to the Kentucky mountains to work with the Beefhide Gospel Mission, building homes for the underprivileged. Mildred and Bert were married in Redlands, Calif., in 1943. In 1945, after serving in Roseville, Pasadena and Lompoc, Calif., they were called to Peru, where they served for several decades. They also served in Colombia and Spain. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter Martha. She is survived by daughter Marilyn and sons Richard and Bob.
