Birthday Honoree

Ruth Presswood Hutchins will celebrate her 101st birthday on January 22, 2012. Ruth was born in Albion, N.Y., and served in Borneo (now Indonesia) with her husband, Ernie Presswood, who was involved in pioneer missionary work. Both were prisoners of the Japanese during World War II. After their release, they remained in Borneo until Ernie’s death. Ruth later married James Hutchins of Chester, Pa. Ruth attends First Alliance Church in Columbus, Ohio, where she continues to be a prayer warrior for missionaries. She wrote about her life in No Sacrifice Too Great, the seventh book in the Jaffray Collection of Missionary Portraits. Ruth would enjoy hearing from her many friends in The Alliance. With the Lord

Frank Joseph Mayo, December 26, 1925–August 31, 2011. Born in Tacoma, Wash., Frank was placed in the Saint Agnes Baby Home in Oregon City, Ore., and was adopted by Arvilla and Willis Mayo. Frank accepted Christ on February 14, 1943, at the C&MA; church in Portland, Ore., and married Ruth Rustad in Silverton, Ore., in 1947. He attended Simpson Bible Institute (now Simpson University in Redding, Calif.) in Seattle, Wash., and subsequently spent 17 years in full-time pastoral ministry with the C&MA;, serving churches in Wolf Creek, Ore.; Boise, Idaho; Ellensburg, Wash.; Dallas, Ore.; and Sherman Oaks, Calif. He also worked for various Christian and charitable organizations as a planned giving consultant and was a respected authority in the field of stewardship. In 1984, he married Virginia (Ginny) Cole Bubna. During their 28 years together, Frank and Ginny traveled throughout the world. Frank is survived by his wife; daughters Karen, Sharon, Rebekah and Deborah; and stepchildren Kurt, Kevin, Kraig and Kimberly.

Rev. William L. Gilliam, August 1, 1934–September 2, 2011. Born in Wise, Va., William was a pre-med student at the University of Dayton (Ohio) and received his degree in theology from Nyack Missionary College (now Nyack [N.Y.] College) in 1958. During his more than 40 years of ministry with the C&MA;, William served in the Perry Lansing (Mich.) C&MA; Church (1959–1964); the New London (Ohio) C&MA; Church (1964–1971); the Newark (Ohio) C&MA; Church (1971–1976); and Sawyerwood Alliance Church in Akron, Ohio (1976–1999). During his retirement, William served as a volunteer chaplain for Summa Health Systems for six years and was a member and elder at the Rolling Acres Alliance Church (Akron, Ohio). William is survived by his wife, Theola; daughters Sharon, Dianne, Judy and Linda; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Rev. Donald (Don) L. Bubna, DD, April 30, 1929–September 24, 2011. Don was born in St. Louis, Mo. He attended John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark., where he met his wife, Deloris (Dee); they married on graduation day, May 19, 1952. While working for John Brown Schools in California, Don served as chaplain as well as a teacher for the military service academies’ prep schools. During that time, the Bubnas planted Pacific Beach Bible Church in San Diego, where they pastored for 10 years. From 1964–1987, Don served as senior pastor of Salem (Ore.) Alliance Church; the couple also provided pastoral care to missionaries in Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Hong Kong. Following their years at Salem Alliance Church, Don served as senior pastor of Peace Portal Alliance Church in White Rock, B.C. Then the Bubnas returned to Salem. Don and Dee also served several interim pastorates, and Don established internship programs at Alliance Theological Seminary (Nyack, N.Y.) and Canadian Bible College (Regina, Sask.; now Ambrose University College, Calgary, Alta.). After Don left full-time pastoring, he served on the board of Peacemaker Ministries and taught in their schools. Don was predeceased by his grandson Ethan Donald; he is survived by his wife; daughters Cindy and Lisa; son Jeffrey; 11 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

Rev. Héactor Gómez Ríos, March 22, 1936–October 10, 2011. Héactor was born in Arecibo, P.R., and received a BA in business administration from Inter American University of Puerto Rico. In 1960, just six months after his conversion, he opened a preaching campus in Arecibo, reaching 40 people for the Kingdom. On April 8, 1960, he married Nilda Cruz Aguila. During his 40 years of service with the C&MA;, Héactor was the founding pastor of Quebradillas C&MA; Church (1971–1976); associate pastor of Arecibo-Pueblo C&MA; Church (1976–1979); and senior pastor of Utuado C&MA; Church (1982–1988) and Hatillo I C&MA; Church (1997–2010). He also served on multiple Christian confraternities in college forums and was an active member of the Youth Evangelistic Crusade. He was treasurer of the C&MA;’s Puerto Rico District for six years; professor at the Alliance Bible Institute in Puerto Rico; and director and a teacher of the Christian Life Department in Evangelical College Captain Correa of Arecibo-Hatillo. Héactor is survived by his wife; son Gadiel; daughter Mairis; and 1 granddaughter.
